چکیده

Sandy sediments of tidal beaches are poor in reactive substances because they are regularly flushed by significant flow caused by tidal forcing. This transport process may significantly affect the flux of reactive solutes to the ocean. A two dimensional model coupling the Richards equation that describes the flow in permeable sediments and the conservation equation of the silicic acid was developed to simulate the evolution of the silicic acid concentration into a variably saturated porous media submitted to tidal forcing. A detailed algorithm of drainage zone under tidal forcing and numerical methods needed to solve it are properly presented. Flux to the ocean has been estimated. The silicic acid concentration displays a permanent lens with low silicic acid concentration at the top of the tidal zone. This lens that results from the tidal forcing, presents weak variations of area during the tidal cycle. Silicic outflux to the ocean increases with increasing beach slope, hydraulic conductivity and tidal range. Simulations reveal that the total silicic acid flux to the ocean from the coastal marine sands can be considered as significant compared to the flux supplied by the rivers. These results may alter the previously published global budget of the silicic acid to the ocean. & 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Quantifying tidally driven benthic oxygen exchange across permeable sediments: An aquatic eddy correlation study

Continental shelves are predominately ( 70%) covered with permeable, sandy sediments. While identified as critical sites for intense oxygen, carbon, and nutrient turnover, constituent exchange across permeable sediments remains poorly quantified. The central North Sea largely consists of permeable sediments and has been identified as increasingly at risk for developing hypoxia. Therefore, we in...

Increasing accuracy of TPXO global tidal model using TELEMA numerical model in Bushehr Bay

Abstract Several methods have been developed such as experimental methods, numerical and computational models for studying the prediction of water level. The purpose of this research is to evaluate and verification Telemac's numerical tidal model in Bushehr Bay waters using measured data. In this regard, the Telemac 2D module has been used to simulate the tide in a A course, 15 days from 01/08...

Eddy correlation measurements of oxygen fluxes in permeable sediments exposed to varying current flow and light

Based on noninvasive eddy correlation measurements at a marine and a freshwater site, this study documents the control that current flow and light have on sediment–water oxygen fluxes in permeable sediments. The marine sediment was exposed to tidal-driven current and light, and the oxygen flux varied from night to day between 229 and 78 mmol m22 d21. A fitting model, assuming a linear increase ...

Fate of copper complexes in hydrothermally altered deep-sea sediments from the Central Indian Ocean Basin.

The current study aims to understand the speciation and fate of Cu complexes in hydrothermally altered sediments from the Central Indian Ocean Basin and assess the probable impacts of deep-sea mining on speciation of Cu complexes and assess the Cu flux from this sediment to the water column in this area. This study suggests that most of the Cu was strongly associated with different binding site...

Enhanced Predictions of Tides and Surges through Data Assimilation (TECHNICAL NOTE)

The regional waters in Singapore Strait are characterized by complex hydrodynamic phenomena as a result of the combined effect of three large water bodies viz. the South China Sea, the Andaman Sea, and the Java Sea. This leads to anomalies in water levels and generates residual currents. Numerical hydrodynamic models are generally used for predicting water levels in the ocean and seas. But thei...
